Contrasting Characters in The Catcher in the Rye.

In “The Catcher in the Rye”, Holden and his sister are complete opposites. This is interesting because Holden hates anybody who thinks or does anything that he would not think or do, and also anybody who would think or do many of the things he would think or do. Then comes his sister, who is completely different then Holden and challenges his worldview in many different ways, but for some reason Holden doesn’t hate her like he does everyone else. This is fascinating because Holden’s sister contrasts Holden, yet he listens to everything she says. This leads to contrasting characters without conflict, you would think. However, Holden eventually loses his temper at the long stream of good advice his sister gives him because there cannot not be conflict. Chekhov’s gun reins supreme.
